The $135,000 Whimsical Stakes (G3) May 4 at Woodbine features an overflow field of 14 plus one also-eligible.
For fillies and mares 4 years old and upward, the six-furlong sprint on Woodbine's synthetic main track drew considerable interest from trainers with horses who have done well on turf and all-weather surfaces in Kentucky, Florida, and even California.
Gerald Isbister and Bakster Farm's Honey Pants was made the 5-2 morning-line favorite on account of her victory in the Las Cienegas Stakes (G3T) going down the hill at Santa Anita Park and most recently a dead-heat second-place finish in the Queen Stakes at Turfway Park where the Cairo Prince mare missed the win by a head.
Also coming up from Kentucky is Lael Stables' Sunday Shoes. The 4-year-old Pioneerof the Nile filly trained by Wesley Ward is undefeated in three starts at Turfway Park, including a victory in the 2023 Serena's Song Stakes.
Florida-based trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. entered Gentry Farms' Accomplished Girl, who is perfect in two starts on all-weather surfaces, with an allowance optional claiming win at Gulfstream Park and a win in the 2023 Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes (G2).
Trainer Mark Casse will attempt to defend his northern base with Glassman Racing's Play the Music, who has four wins sprinting on the turf, including the Lightning City Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs Feb. 24. The 4-year-old Mo Town filly most recently finished sixth in the Giant's Causeway Stakes (G3T) at Keeneland.
