Huntsinger First Black-Type Winner for Cinco Charlie

Sam Sherman and John Middleton's Huntsinger became the first black-type winner for Spendthrift Farm stallion Cinco Charlie Sept. 27 when he took the $60,000 Kip Deville Stakes at Remington Park. Guided by Lane Luzzi, Huntsinger broke next to last and raced at the back of the pack through a :22.60 quarter-mile. He was up into fourth at the half-mile mark, just four lengths off leader Red N Wild. Luzzi asked his colt for more entering the turn, and Huntsinger responded in kind. The pair angled out three wide and kicked for home. Just past the quarter pole, Huntsinger took command under left-handed pressure from Luzzi and sped home to win by 1 1/4 lengths. The final time for the six-furlong dirt sprint was 1:10.85. Bred in Texas by Larry Huntsinger, Huntsinger is out of the Leo Castelli mare Castelli's Ace. The colt trained by Danny Pish is 2-for-2 with $59,712 in earnings. A son of Indian Charlie—Ten Halos, by Marquetry, Cinco Charlie was bred in Kentucky by Candyland Farm. Stakes-placed Ten Halos is a half sister to Super Derby (G2) winner My Pal Charlie and Amsterdam Stakes (G2) victor Bwana Charlie, both by Indian Charlie. Candyland sold Cinco Charlie at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Easter Fall Yearlings Sale for $75,000 to Cary Frommer, who then resold the colt for $190,000 to B & C Horses at the 2014 Ocala Breeders' Sales March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. Owners Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt placed Cinco Charlie in training with Steve Asmussen, under whom he earned six black-type victories, including the Bashford Manor Stakes (G3), while racing from 2 to 4. He was retired with an 8-2-4 record from 18 starts and earnings of $608,920. Cinco Charlie entered stud at Spendthrift near Lexington in 2017 and has stood for $5,000 since.
