Calumet Homebred Bravazo Returns Home for Stud Career

Multiple grade 1-placed, grade 2 winner Bravazo, a Calumet Farm homebred, is the latest addition to the Lexington farm's stallion roster for 2021. He will enter stud at $6,000. The 5-year-old son of Awesome Again raced from 2 to 5, compiling a 3-4-3 record from 22 starts and banking $2,033,195 in earnings. Under the care of Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, Bravazo won in his second start at 2 by 4 3/4 lengths at Churchill Downs. He was immediately tested in grade 1 company in his next start where he finished second in the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) at Keeneland. At 3, he got off to a fast start with two consecutive wins that included the Risen Star Stakes Presented by Lamarque Ford (G2). He held his own through the Triple Crown series, finishing a respectable sixth after a rough trip in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) and second by half a length in the Preakness Stakes (G1) to eventual Triple Crown winner Justify. Bravazo remained competitive through the summer of his sophomore year with a second in the betfair.com Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) and third in the Runhappy Travers Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1). He went on to place third in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) and second in the Clark Handicap Presented by Norton Healthcare (G1). Bravazo is out of the Cee's Tizzy winner Tiz o' Gold, who is the dam of two winners from two to race. The stallion's second dam, Pep o' Gold (Slew o' Gold) is a winning half sister to stakes-placed Pewterville, whose dam Ginged Up is a full sister to multiple black-type winner Broadway Pointe and a half sister to black-type winner and black-type producer Mz. Ann. Bravazo is the second son of Adena Springs' high-profile pensioner Awesome Again to stand at Calumet, which also stands 2013 Preakness Stakes winner and top-10 fourth-crop sire Oxbow. Other successful sons of Awesome Again at stud include current leading North American fourth-crop sire Paynter, who stands at WinStar Farm, and top 25 sire Ghostzapper, who has been relocated to Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa for the 2021 season as part of a new partnership between Adena Springs and Hill 'n' Dale. Awesome Again is the sire of 69 black-type winners, 39 graded/group winners, and three champions. Calumet will offer discounts on Bravazo's fee for multiple mare packages and quality mares.
