Flurry Racing Stables and David Flannigan's Burrow emerged as the winner in a field of blue-blooded maidens in the fifth race at Churchill Downs May 16.
The 3-year-old son of Candy Ride was making his third career start, coming off a runner-up debut effort last October at Keeneland and a fifth-place finish in a November maiden special weight at Churchill.
Bet down as the 2-1 favorite Sunday in his first try on the turf, Burrow broke sharply under Florent Geroux but was content to tuck in behind the early leaders through opening splits of :24.49 and :48.60. Striding comfortably between horses down the backstretch, the Brad Cox pupil inched his way closer to the front three wide around the turn as Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider's homebred Prairie forged his way to the front with two furlongs left to run. Geroux tipped Burrow to the middle of the lane and the colt stormed past a stubborn Prairie, holding off the late challenges of Cool Rags and Performing Arts, a half brother to grade 1 winner Oscar Performance .
The final time for the mile on the firm turf was 1:35.99.
Burrow, purchased for $200,000 from the Coastal Equine consignment at the 2020 Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, is out of the grade 2-winning mare Letgomyecho. The daughter of Menifee has produced Echo Town , the winner of the 2020 H. Allen Jerkens Stakes Presented by Runhappy (G1) at Saratoga Race Course, and grade 3 victor J Boys Echo. Letgomyecho has a 2-year-old Gun Runner filly named Echo Zulu who has not started yet for owner Winchell Thoroughbreds and a yearling American Pharoah filly.
