Laurel Park, Charles Town Cancel Racing Jan. 6

Laurel Park and Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races have canceled racing Jan. 6 due to weather-related conditions. Laurel cited the lingering effects of a winter storm that hit the Mid-Atlantic region earlier in the week with rounds of sleet, freezing rain, and snowfall, while Charles Town noted harsh weather moving through the area Thursday evening. Charles Town races at night. Live racing for the two tracks is scheduled to resume Jan. 7. Charles Town said its canceled Thursday program will be moved in its entirety Jan. 12. Laurel was closed for training earlier in the week after the storm. No workouts have taken place there since Jan. 2, according to Equibase data. The Maryland track, which canceled racing in the first part of December after a spike in breakdowns there in November, reported Jan. 4 to the Maryland Racing Commission that no catastrophic breakdowns had occurred there to that time since it reopened for training and racing in mid-December. Laurel had experienced problems with the body and pad of its main track late last fall after renovations to the surface during the spring and summer. Approximately 2,000 tons of sand have since been added to the racing surface.
