Slew's Tiz Whiz under Jose Zunino collared Papa's Golden Boy in the final strides to score a 2 3/4-length victory in the $150,000 Longacres Mile Stakes Aug. 14 at Emerald Downs.
Breaking from the inside post, Slew's Tiz Whiz raced in midpack as Papa's Golden Boy led through fractions of :22.70, :45.17, 1:08.97, and 1:21.56.
Papa's Golden Boy had a three-length advantage past midstretch, but Slew's Tiz Whiz was inhaling horses into the final leg, sweeping past Top Executive and then running by the leader to win the one-mile race in 1:34.46 on a fast track.
Five Star General completed the trifecta.
Slew's Tiz Whiz paid $8.80, improved his record to 6-1-1 from 13 starts, and increased his earnings to $170,707 for K D Thoroughbreds.
"We were a little lucky going into the first turn, but everything worked out great," Zunino said. "He wanted to go at the quarter pole, so I let him go, and he was the best."
Slew's Tiz Whiz has won three straight, scoring in a six-furlong allowance and the 6 1/2-furlong Governor's Stakes, in which he also caught Papa's Golden Boy late.
"The allowance race was good and the last two races have been superb," said trainer Tom Wenzel. "This horse is such an overachiever."
Bred in Washington by Karl Krieg, Slew's Tiz Whiz is out of the Rosberg mare Ros's Girl. The dam has a yearling Danzing Candy filly and dropped a Smiling Tiger colt this year. She was bred back to Sir Prancelot for the 2023 season.
