History was made Oct. 4 at Leicester when Just Fine became the first winner in the silks of King Charles III, with the victory described as a "very nice pick-me-up" by the monarch's racing manager.
Just Fine is trained by Sir Michael Stoute, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's longest-standing trainer, who famously saddled Estimate to win the 2013 Gold Cup (G1) for her at Royal Ascot. Ryan Moore rode Estimate on that famous afternoon and similarly guided home the King's winner of a 10-furlong handicap.
Just Fine was the King's sixth runner since the royal colors and horses were transferred to him following the Sept. 8 death of the Queen. Educator was his first runner Sept. 29.
The King's racing manager, John Warren, said: "We are all delighted for the King and Queen Consort that they have had their first winner in the Sovereign's colors.
"It's fitting that Sir Michael, who trains the horse, was the Queen's longest-standing trainer. As you can appreciate, their royal highnesses have much to think about at present, but I'm sure this will be a very nice pick-me-up."
Stoute was also present alongside other trainers at the Queen's funeral service at Windsor, and in his tribute following her death said it was an "honor and a privilege" to train royal runners.
Just Fine, sent off at 100-30, was recording his first win since July 2021 and held off 9-4 favorite Sea The Casper by 4 1/2 lengths.
