Domestic Spending Suffers Pelvic Fracture in BC Mile

Klaravich Stables' Domestic Spending (GB) was eased in the far turn of the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile Presented by PDJF (G1T) by rider Flavien Prat Nov. 5 at Keeneland and was being taken to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital for further evaluation. Trainer Chad Brown tweeted that the multiple grade 1 winner suffered a serious injury. "Domestic Spending suffered a serious pelvic fracture during the running of the BC Mile," Brown tweeted. "He is currently stable and getting the best care/evaluation at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital. I will provide updates when they are available." A Breeders' Cup statement earlier said Domestic Spending "was immediately attended to by an expert team of veterinarians led by (Kentucky Horse Racing Commission) chief veterinarian Dr. Nick Smith and was transported back to his barn by equine ambulance for evaluation by attending veterinarian Dr. Bo Landry." The statement went on to add that "Domestic Spending was radiographed and does not appear to have a lower-limb fracture. At this time, he is being stabilized for transfer to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital for further evaluation." An on-call veterinarian from the American Association of Equine Practitioners provided an initial update after the race. "He was lame in his left hind limb," vet Al Ruggles said. After being sedated, the horse walked onto the ambulance and was taken back to his stall to be examined. Trainer Chad Brown confirmed a radiograph taken at the barn of the gelding's lower limb was negative. "I may be speculating, but the concern is over a potential pelvic injury," Brown said. "The horse is definitely uncomfortable up high in the hind end." Ruggles added that a radiograph in the stall is limited as to how much of the leg it shows, and also certain injuries, such as those to soft tissue, might take time to show up and be diagnosed. The 5-year-old gelded son of Kingman is a multiple grade 1 winner with earnings of more than $1.4 million. It was his first race in 448 days after finishing second in the 2021 Mr. D Stakes (G1T) at Arlington International Racecourse. He was scratched the Thursday before last year's Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T) with a soft-tissue injury. Domestic Spending returned to trainer Brown's barn in August and was entering this year's Breeders' Cup race off three bullet workouts at Keeneland—the last Oct. 29 when he went the fastest at five furlongs on the turf.
