On the heels of the Nov. 4-5 Breeders' Cup World Championships, 13 fillies and mares will make their way to the auction ring.
Nine will be on offer at The November Sale, Fasig-Tipton's marquee breeding stock sale held Nov. 6 at the Newtown Paddocks, while the remainder will go through the Nov. 7 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
All are being sold as racing/broodmare prospects.
Chief among them is Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) victress Caravel, who sells Monday at Keeneland. The 5-year-old Mizzen Mast filly upset the boys at odds of 42-1 under Tyler Gaffalione for Qatar Racing, Marc Detampel, and Madaket Stables and trainer Brad Cox. She demonstrated her versatility in 2022 with wins in the Queen Stakes on the all-weather track at Turfway Park, and on the lawn in the Intercontinental Stakes (G3T), Smart N Fancy Stakes, and Franklin Stakes (G3T). Last year she was third in the Highlander Stakes (G1T) and won the Caress Stakes (G3T). Consigned by Hunter Valley Farm as Hip 224, Caraval heads to the ring with a record of 12-0-3 for earnings of $1,331,152.
Set to Shine on Night of the Stars
Before the action kicks off at Keeneland, however, it is Fasig-Tipton's turn in the spotlight, where a filly who turned in a dazzling performance Saturday is sure to turn heads in the ring.
A grade 1 winner in both her native Argentina and in the U.S., Blue Stripe battled to the wire to finish second by a nose to Malathaat in the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) in a three-way photo finish with Clairiere. She added a victory in the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (G1), Santa Margarita Stakes (G2), and second-best in the Santa Maria Stakes (G2) to her record this year after coming to the U.S. The 5-year-old Equal Stripes mare is campaigned by Marcelo Polanco for owner Jose Cerrillo of Pozo de Luna. She sells Sunday as Hip 316 with Taylor Made Sales Agency and brings in a record of 6-2-2 in 11 starts with earnings of $801,882. Her Pure Prize half sister Blue Prize won the Distaff in 2019 along with two editions of the Juddmonte Spinster Stakes (G1) in 2019-18, and sold for $5 million to OXO Equine.
ELiTE will consign the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) eighth-place finisher, Lady Rocket, as Hip 195. The 5-year-old mare by Tale of the Cat sells with a record of 7-4-2 in 17 starts for trainer Brad Cox and owners Frank Fletcher Racing Operations and Ten Strike Racing. This year she picked up a win in the Chicago Stakes (G3) along with placings in the Gallant Bloom Stakes (G2) and Ruffian Stakes (G2). She sits on earnings of $767,088. Liz Crow, purchasing for BSW Bloodstock, initially sourced the filly from the Ocala Breeders' Sales' Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training for $420,000 from de Meric Sales. Lady Rocket was bred in Kentucky by La Ciega and the Tale of the Cat Syndicate out of the Eskendereya mare Allons Dancer.
Offered as Hip 231 by Bluewater Sales is the D. Wayne Lukas-trained filly Secret Oath, the winner of this season's Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) and Honeybee Stakes (G3). The daughter of the late Arrogate turned in a gallant effort in the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1), finishing fifth for Briland Farm, who also bred the 3-year-old filly. An earner of $1,768,417 in 13 starts with a record of 5-2-3, the tough filly brings a lot of upside both on the racetrack and as part of the broodmare band for her new owners. Secret Oath is out of the grade 1-placed stakes-winning Absinthe Minded, by Quiet American.
Fellow Distaff contender Awake At Midnyte will go under the hammer Sunday as Hip 260 with Kingswood Farm. The 3-year-old Nyquist filly has been campaigned by Reddam Racing with trainer Doug O'Neill for her nine-start career, seeing a record of 2-3-1, with earnings of $269,675. She was sourced from The Gulfstream Sale, Fasig-Tipton's select 2-year-olds in training sale in South Florida, for $320,000 by Dennis O'Neill from Clary Bloodstock last year. This year she was second runner-up in the Santa Ynez Stakes (G2) and Zenyatta Stakes (G2) with a third-place finish in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes Presented by Fasig-Tipton (G2).
Stonestreet Stables' 2020 European champion 2-year-old filly Campanelle, twice a grade 1 winner in the 2020 Darley Prix Morny-Finale des Darley Series (G1) and Commonwealth Cup (G1) of 2021, will also be sent through the ring. The 4-year-old Kodiac filly landed the Giant's Causeway Stakes and Mint Ladies Sprint Stakes (G3T) this year and finished third at Royal Ascot in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes (G1) for trainer Wesley Ward. She ran seventh in the Turf Sprint (G1T) on Saturday. Consigned as Hip 272 with Eaton Sales, Campanelle boasts earnings of over $1 million with a record of 6-0-2 from 11 trips to the post.
Hunter Valley Farm, Debra L. O'Connor, and Marc Detampel's Family Way finished 10th in the Maker's Mark Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) before heading to the Fasig-Tipton ring. The 5-year-old mare by Uncle Mo will be offered as Hip 287 with Hunter Valley Farm. Victorious this year in the Orchid Stakes (G3T) at Gulfstream Park, she hit the board in The Very One Stakes (G3T), Bewitch Stakes (G3T), New York Stakes (G3T), Beverly D. Stakes (G1T), AGS Ladies Marathon Stakes (G3T), and Rodeo Drive Stakes (G1T). The Brendan Walsh pupil sits on earnings of $1,002,860 in 20 starts with a record of 5-6-3. The gray mare comes from the family of grade 1 winner Caravaggio and grade 2 winner My Jen.
Two-time grade 1 winner Going to Vegas sells as Hip 293 with Taylor Made Sales Agency after finishing 12th in Saturday's Filly & Mare Turf for trainer Philip D'Amato and owners Abbondanza Racing, Medallion Racing, and MyRacehorse. An earner of $989,151 in 29 starts, the 5-year-old Goldencents mare has registered eight wins from 29 starts, including top level scores in the Rodeo Drive Stakes (G1T) in 2022 and 2021, John C. Mabee Stakes (G2T), and Santa Ana Stakes (G3T), while collecting runner up finishes in seven other graded events.
Grade 1-placed Cairo Consort contested Friday's Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T), finishing third to Meditate. The daughter of Cairo Prince is consigned as Hip 298 with Frankfort Park Farm. This year, she captured the Catch A Glimpse Stakes at Woodbine in her fourth start, followed by a second in the Johnnie Walker Natalma Stakes (G1T). Bred by Frankfort Park Stud in Kentucky, the juvenile has been in training with Nathan Squires for owner Maple Lane Farm. She sells with a record of 2-1-2 in six starts for earnings of $266,149. She hails from the family of grade 1 winners Awesome Maria, Discreet Cat, and Discreetly Mine.
European invader Lady Hollywood, by Havana Grey, sells as Hip 317 with St George Sales. She was fifth in Friday's Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1T) for Alice Haynes and Kia Joorabchian's AMO Racing. In September, she took the Prix d'ARenberg (G3) at ParisLongchamp and the Arqana Irish EBF Marwell Stakes at Naas. The juvenile is lightly raced in eight starts with a record of 4-1-0 and earnings of $111,452.
Action Continues at Keeneland
Three other powerhouse fillies will join Caravel in going under the hammer during Book 1 of the Keeneland November Sale.
The first through the ring on Monday is grade 3 winner Edgeway. Consigned as Hip 156 by Lane's End, the 5-year-old by Competitive Edge finished seventh in Saturday's Filly & Mare Sprint. The John Sadler trainee won the Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3), Las Flores Stakes (G3), and Kalookan Queen Stakes this year. She was second in last year's Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) behind Ce Ce at Del Mar for her owners Hronis Racing. She sells with earnings of $763,860 in 14 starts with a record of 8-2-1.
KatieRich Farms offers their homebred filly by American Pharoah , American Apple, as Hip 234. The filly comes from a black-type winning family in the Clever Trick mare Miss Mary Apples, producer of grade 3 winner Lady Apple and stakes winners Dr. Daimonds Prize and Miss Red Delicious. She finished sixth in the Juvenile Turf Sprint Friday. In October, she was a winner in the Matron Stakes (G3T) for trainer Daniel Leitch. The filly heads into the sale with earnings of $205,700 in six starts with a record of 2-0-1.
The grade 1-winning daughter of Lope de Vega , Dreamloper, will be on offer as Hip 239 with Ed Walker Racing. She raced Saturday in the FanDuel Mile Presented by PDJF (G1) to a 12th-place finish. Dreamloper is out of the stakes-winning Teofilo mare, Livia's Dream. This season, the Ed Walker pupil won the Betfair Exchange Dahlia Stakes (G2), Prix d'Ispahan (G1), and Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (G1). She sells Monday with a record of 6-1-3 in 18 starts with earnings of $674,624 for owner/breeder Mrs. Olivia Hoare.
