McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds announced Dec. 9 that grade 1-placed multiple stakes winner Snapper Sinclair will retire to stud for the 2023 breeding season at its farm near Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Raced by Jeff Bloom's Bloom Racing Stable, and trained by Steve Asmussen, the son of City Zip showed durability with 39 starts over six seasons, with 26 made on dirt and 13 on the turf. He retired with a 7-9-4 record and more than $1.85 million in earnings. He made three starts in Breeders' Cup World Championships races, getting an at-best fourth in the 2019 Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1).

Snapper Sinclair became a fan favorite at Kentucky Downs where he won three of his four stakes starts over four years from 2 to 6. He won the Fasig-Tipton Turf Showcase Juvenile Stakes, Tourist Mile Stakes, and TVG Stakes at the Franklin, Ky., track. He also had six graded stakes-placed finishes at five different tracks, including a second in the 2020 Cigar Mile Handicap (G1) at Aqueduct Racetrack.

"I love this horse because he showed up every time, whether dirt or turf, sprinting or two turns. He raced in the toughest company throughout his career and always tried," said Jeff Bloom.

Asmussen had equal praise: "What a cool horse, he's so versatile, could run on any surface and would run against anyone. I love him and believe he deserves a chance at stud."

John McMahon with McMahon Thoroughbreds said Snapper Sinclair is an attractive sire prospect because of his combination of race record and pedigree along with high regard he has for Bloom and Asmussen.

"You never know from where a stallion might come and his sire City Zip started in New York at $7,500 before he moved to Lane's End and became a prominent sire. You think about iconic stallions like Storm Cat, Tapit , War Front , Into Mischief  and they all stood for $10,000 at one time, and we believe Snapper Sinclair has enough of the right ingredients to become a successful stallion."

Bred in Kentucky by K & G Stables, Snapper Sinclair is out of the stakes-placed Yes It's True daughter True Addiction, who won at 2 and 3 and was second in the Adirondack Breeders' Cup Stakes (G2). True Addiction is a half sister to stakes winner Cafe Du Monde (New Year's Day), and the second dam of these siblings is grade 3 winner Risen Colony, a full sister to grade 1 winner Cherokee Colony.

Snapper Sinclair will stand for $5,000 with a live foal, stands and nurses guarantee.
