Spendthrift Farm's Basin , winner of the 2019 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, sired his first reported foal Jan. 17 when a filly was born at Hardin Farm near Paris, Ky.

Bred by Patrick Crowley, the dark bay filly is the first foal out of the unraced Honor Code mare Dressed Up.

Campaigned by Jackpot Farm and trained by Todd Pletcher and Steve Asmussen over his 12-race career, Basin proved his versatility with performances from 5 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/8 miles. He broke his maiden at Saratoga in his second start before going on to score a runaway 6 1/2-length victory in the Hopeful, the meet's premier race for 2-year-old males, when he stopped the clock in 1:23.48 for seven furlongs over a sloppy track.

As a 3-year-old in 2020, Basin began the year on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, finishing runner-up to Charlatan  in the Arkansas Derby (G1) after running third behind Nadal and Excession in the Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park. He also ran second to Yaupon  in the Amsterdam Stakes (G2) that season.

The first grade 1 winner by Liam's Map , Basin was bred by Cottonwood Stables out of the multiple stakes-producing Johannesburg mare Appenzell. He is a half brother to grade 3 winner Rise Up, the earner of $1.2 million. Basin stands his second season at stud for an advertised fee of $5,000 stands and nurses.
