Charlatan's First Foals Arrive in Kentucky

The first reported foal by multiple grade 1 winner Charlatan is a colt out of the stakes-placed Dixie Union mare Inventive that was born Jan. 17 at Chris Baccari's Seclusive Farm, according to Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa, where the son of Speightstown stands for $50,000. "This colt has strength, power, substance, and great bone," said Baccari. "(I'm) excited to have other mares in foal to Charlatan and will plan to breed back to him after seeing this colt. I think Charlatan has a ton of potential with the likelihood of siring a great racehorse." The colt is a half brother to Del Mar Futurity (G1) winner Klimt (Quality Road) and grade 3-placed winner West Coast Chick (Malibu Moon). Charlatan, now 6, won the 2020 Arkansas Derby (G1) and Malibu Stakes (G1) and was second in the 2021 Saudi Cup (G1) on his way to earning $4,047,200. As a covering sire, he was represented last year by seven mares that sold for $500,000 or more, including Proud Emma, who sold for $1 million to Summer Wind Equine. Mill Ridge Farm also reported a Charlatan filly born Jan. 20 out of the stakes-placed More Than Ready mare Vevina and bred by RPS Bloodstock. Vevina is a half sister to grade 2 winner Friar's Road (Quality Road). "She is a nice leggy filly with good bone and correct," said Price Bell of Mill Ridge Farm.
