Cowtown Cat, the 2007 Illinois Derby (G2) winner and Midwest stallion market stalwart, has found a new home in the Oklahoma panhandle where he is now stands at Kirton Farms near Turpin, Okla.
Sabrina Kirton said the 19-year-old son of Distorted Humor fits her clients' needs because they are primarily breed-to-race stables.
"We really liked him because he's throwing 77% winners from starters and over $77,000 per runner," she said. "Even though he has some age on him, he is in fantastic condition."
Cowtown Cat stood the past nine years in Ohio where he was ranked among the top five leading sires before he was relocated. Now, he is third on Oklahoma's leading sires list with $760,935 in progeny earnings.
Kirton Farms also stands Raising the Flag, a winning son of Tapit out of the Milwaukee Brew stakes winner Milwaukee Appeal. His first foals are yearlings this year. Both Raising the Flag and Cowtown Cat stand for $1,500.
Cowtown Cat has sired six black-type winners, another eight stakes performers, and his progeny have earned more than $16.5 million. His best runner so far is multiple graded stakes winner and 2014 Canadian champion sprinter Calgary Cat. This year he's had two non-black-type stakes winners in George Lewis Memorial Stakes winner Romantic Cowboy and Buckeye Native Stakes winner Dr. Zarnett, who has four wins for 2023.
