Raise Cain Outfinishes Dr. Venkman in Perryville

Andrew and Rania Warren's Raise Cain was talented enough to beat more than half of the top 3-year-olds in the two-turn, 1 1/4-mile Kentucky Derby (G1) when eighth May 6 at Churchill Downs. But he is at his best racing one turn, a fact on display Oct. 21 when the Violence colt outgamed Dr. Venkman to win the seven-furlong, $235,188 Perryville Stakes at Keeneland. The victory was his second in nine starts this year, with his prior score coming on the one-turn Gotham Stakes (G3) at a mile in March at Aqueduct Racetrack. Raise Cain, who rallied from fourth in Saturday's field of six, won by a head. He was timed in 1:23.58 over a fast track, returning $14.88 to win. Post Time was third, followed across the wire by Loyal Company, Verifying, and Confidence Game. What They Said "He gave me a very, very quick turn of foot," jockey Luis Saez said. "I think Luis Saez made the difference. … Luis gives you that just extra little bit," trainer Ben Colebrook added. Bred in Kentucky out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Lemon Belle, Raise Cain was a $180,000 purchase by Andrew Warren at the 2021 September Yearling Sale at Keeneland from the Warrendale Sales consignment. Violence, whose top performers this year include Forte, Dr. Schivel, and Newgrange, is among North America's leading sires. Next year, he will stand for an advertised fee of $60,000 at Hill 'n' Dale Farms in Paris, Ky.
