Bred and raced by the Niarchos Family, Karakontie competed primarily in France, where he won a pair of group races at age 2, including the seven-furlong Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (G1). At 3, he captured the French Two Thousand Guineas (G1) before traveling to Santa Anita Park, where he defeated older horses in the 2014 Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T) and recorded a 121 Equibase Speed Figure. He was retired after one placing in three starts the following year.

Karakontie continues to establish himself as one of the best values in Kentucky. This year's top runners are led by She Feels Pretty, winner of the Natalma Stakes (G1T) and third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T); Foreign Relations, winner of the Louisville Stakes (G3T) at Churchill Downs; Princess Grace, a multiple grade 2 winner and multiple grade 1 performer of over $1.8 million; and Spendarella, winner of the 2022 Del Mar Oaks (G1T), Appalachian Stakes (G2T), Herecomesthebride Stakes (G3T), and runner-up in the Coronation Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot. This year was runner-up in the Just a Game Stakes (G1T) and Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes (G2T).

In 2023, yearlings by Karakontie have sold for an average of $49,761, topped by a $525,000 yearling.
