The Soviet Problem Stakes at Los Alamitos Race Course Dec. 10 delivered freshman sire Pavel his first black-type winner when his daughter Madison Rae won the one-mile contest gate to wire by half a length.
The gray or roan filly is trained by Peter Miller for CYBT, Rafter JR Ranch, STD Racing Stable, and Michael Nentwig.
J. Paul Reddam bred Madison Rae out of the Scat Daddy mare Taffeta, who is out of grade 2 winner Spring Style (IRE) (by Pivotal). The filly was sold during the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale by Wavertree Stables for $38,000 to Miller.
Madison Rae placed third in her debut Sept. 9 at Del Mar and won next out going six furlongs at Santa Anita Park. She would be unplaced in the Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes but regroup to earn black-type in the Soviet Problem. Her four career starts have earned $109,940 in purses.
Reddam raced Pavel, a son of Creative Cause , with trainer Doug O'Neill and celebrated wins from him in the Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) and Smarty Jones Stakes (G3). The horse also was second in the $1 Million Pacific Classic Stakes (G1).
Pavel stands at Reddam's Ocean Breeze Ranch in California for $4,000. He has sired five winners to date from nine runners, who include stakes-placed winners Petit Filet and Refocus.
