Baoma Corp.'s undefeated superstar, Nysos, will be out of training for at least one month. The news was reported March 12 by Sue Finley of the Thoroughbred Daily News.
According to text messages Finley received from trainer Bob Baffert, Nysos experienced a "minor" setback. The son of Nyquist will undergo 30 days of tack walking. Baffert also stated "no plans" are in place.
An impressive winner in three starts that included Del Mar's Bob Hope Stakes (G3) and Santa Anita Park's Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3), Nysos had asserted himself as one of the country's leading 3-year-olds. He was scratched from the March 3 San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita after Baffert stated that he changed his mind and wanted to wait for the April 6 Santa Anita Derby (G1).
Nysos has not appeared on the work tab since Feb. 25, when he went five furlongs in 1:00 1/5.
With this setback, the Santa Anita Derby is off the table. Ineligible for the Kentucky Derby (G1) due to Baffert's ban from Churchill Downs, Nysos had been a strong contender for the Preakness Stakes (G1), closing as the 5-2 future wager favorite this month. Although not yet announced, it is likely his Preakness status could be in jeopardy.
Baffert did not respond to a text seeking comments by the time this article was written.
