Times sped up considerably May 16 at the second under tack show for the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale at the Maryland State Fair Grounds in Timonium, Md.
Only one horse—Hip 12, a Volatile filly consigned by Hartley/DeRenzo—hit the :10 mark at the sale's first under tack show May 14 when hips 1-200 were scheduled to breeze. The May 15 under tack show was postponed due to rain, and the start of Thursday's breezes were delayed two hours for track maintenance.
Once the action started, colts by Street Boss and Vekoma were among those who capitalized on conditions. Hip 285, a Florida-bred colt by first-crop sire Vekoma, skipped over the Timonium surface as he put in a one-furlong work in :09 4/5.
The chestnut colt consigned by Wavertree Stables, agent, is the second foal out of Scion Power, an unraced sister to grade 3 winner Derwin's Star. Her first foal is the Malibu Moon 3-year-old colt Banded Rocket, who is unplaced in two stakes attempts but has two wins from five starts.
The Vekoma colt is a $175,000 pinhook out of the 2023 The July Sale, Fasig-Tipton's Kentucky sale of selected yearlings, where he was purchased by Waves Bloodstock.
Hip 314, a gray/roan Kentucky-bred Street Boss colt out of the winning Sky Mesa mare Snow Mesa, equaled that :09 4/5 clocking. Consigned by Longoria Training and Sales, Hip 314 was a $35,000 purchase at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
Whereas only one horse hit the :21 1/5 mark for two furlongs at the opening-day under tack show—Hartley/DeRenzo's Authentic colt consigned as Hip 59—four horses recorded that time Thursday:
- Hip 203, an Instilled Regard filly out of the placed Big Brown mare One Foxy Grey, consigned by Hoppel. The Kentucky-bred filly was an $18,000 buy at the 2022 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
- Hip 225, a Maclean's Music colt out of the winning Congrats mare Port of Indy. Consigned by Golden Rock Thoroughbreds, the Kentucky-bred colt previously sold for $125,000 at Fasig-Tipton's Kentucky October Yearlings sale.
- Hip 258, a Bolt d'Oro colt consigned by Pike Racing at Highlander. The gray/roan colt is the second foal out of Reinita, a sister to grade 2-placed stakes winner All Right, by Dominus. A $57,000 pinhook out of the Fasig-Tipton July sale, the Bolt d'Oro colt was bought back for $170,000 at the Ocala Breeders' March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.
- Hip 374, a Kentucky-bred Authentic filly consigned by Hartley/DeRenzo. The bay filly was a $280,000 purchase as a weanling at Keeneland November. She is the fifth foal out of the placed Afleet Alex mare Truly Gifted, who is a half sister to grade 1 winner and sire Latent Heat, grade 2 winner Indian Flare, group 3 winner Art Master, and stakes-placed Real Trust.
