Australian champion Winx's half sister Wings Of Desire is set to make her debut over 5 1/2 furlongs at Hawkesbury Racecourse July 22.
Winx retired in 2019 being ranked as one of the top turf horses in the world. The daughter of Street Cry amassed AU$26 million in earnings and captured 25 group 1 events over a five-year span. Winx stands as one of the few racehorses to be inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame while still actively in training, taking up that honor in 2017 in the midst of a championship season.
Wings Of Desire, bred and owned by John Camilleri's Fairway Thoroughbreds, the breeder of Winx, is the 10th and final foal out of the mare Vegas Showgirl. The Al Akbar mare died last fall at the age of 21.
The 2-year-old Pride Of Dubai filly has turned in two eye-catching trial performances ahead of her debut.
"I think she's got some ability," said trainer Michael Freedman. "Trials are one thing, I don't get too carried away, I'd rather see what they can do race day, but she has certainly done a nice job at both her trials.
"Obviously she has got the pedigree to go with it, so it would be nice to get her going at the back end of her 2-year-old year and keep her going and see where we get to.
"While 1,100 meters is nice first time out, she gives me the impression she will appreciate getting out over further."
