Blue Star Racing's stallion Breaking Lucky was euthanized Aug. 3 due to complications from colic. The 12-year-old son of Lookin at Lucky had a five-year stallion career that included Florida and Louisiana. In 2024, he was the top second-crop sire by winners in Louisiana and the southwest region.
"Our entire family is heartbroken. Lucky was such a loved member of our family and local community. We are still trying to process that he is gone," said Blue Star Racing owner Dex Comardelle. "I want to wish a heartfelt thank you to all the breeders, trainers, and owners who have supported him in Florida and in Louisiana during these last five years. We are also very thankful to the vets and surgeons who tried everything they could to save him."
Breaking Lucky successfully raced for the partnerships of West Point Thoroughbreds, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Eric Young, and R.A. Hill Stable. He won the 2015 Prince of Wales Stakes—the second leg of Canada's Triple Crown—while defeating multiple grade 1 winner and Sovereign Award champion 3-year-old Shaman Ghost .
In 2016, Breaking Lucky won the Seagram Cup Stakes (G3) at Woodbine. He went on to place in the Clark Handicap (G1), Whitney Stakes (G1), and Stephen Foster Handicap (G1). Breaking Lucky was on the board in 10 graded stakes and two black-type races, earning nearly $1.2 million.
Breaking Lucky stood at Blue Star Racing's breeding facilities in Scott, La.
