The Henderson County Sheriff's Office in Kentucky said no foul play is suspected after the bodies of two individuals were found in the overnight hours Aug. 27 at Ellis Park.

In a midday press release that followed a short morning announcement, the office of Sheriff Chip Stauffer said its deputies and emergency personnel arrived at Ellis Park just past midnight on Aug. 27.

"Upon arrival, a male subject was found deceased in his apartment on the backside of Ellis Park," the release stated. "Personnel with the ambulance service discovered the victim had been with another person earlier that night. Emergency personnel went to check on that subject and found him deceased in his apartment.

"After a preliminary investigation, we do not suspect foul play at this time, and there is no danger to the general public. The two victims were transported to Louisville for an autopsy. The investigation is ongoing."

Citing the active investigation, Kevin Kerstein, who handles publicity for Ellis Park, declined comment.

Ellis Park, located in Henderson, Ky., near Evansville, Ind., is a Churchill Downs Inc.-owned track that conducts Thoroughbred racing during the summer. It concluded its meet Aug. 26.

Racetracks across North America, including Ellis Park, house backstretch workers near where horses are stabled, often in dormitories and tack rooms.
