G1W Cloth of Cloud Tops Tattersalls Dec. Online Sale
South African group 1 winner Cloth of Cloud (SAF) topped the Tattersalls Online December Sale Dec. 12, when making 180,000 guineas (US$239,400, 1 guinea=US$1.33) to Hubie de Burgh. Winner of the S A Nursery (G1) at Turffontein in 2016, and the Pretty Polly Stakes (G3) the same year, Moulton Stud's daughter of Captain Al formed part of the Southern Hemisphere session in the sale, whereby a select bunch of mares were offered in foal to Too Darn Hot (GB). The 11-year-old, a half sister to fellow top-level winner Silver Mountain (SAF), is the dam of Garden Route. The son of Galileo won a Windsor novice for the William Haggas yard in June last year. Cloth of Cloud also produced a colt by Wootton Bassett (GB) this year, who sold to Glenvale Stud for 200,000 guineas at the recent Tattersalls December Foal Sale when offered by The Castlebridge Consignment. De Burgh said: "She's been purchased for an existing client who wanted to be part of the Too Darn Hot success story in the Southern Hemisphere. Cloth of Cloud was a very good filly during her career on the track and Too Darn Hot has been doing an outstanding job with his progeny in Australia. It's an exciting journey to be embarking on. "The Thoroughbred online sales concept has been a huge success in Australia. It's still in its infancy in the Northern Hemisphere but I believe the concept is a vitally important part of the structure of selling Thoroughbreds and I'm a big supporter of it." Ridgeport went for another Moulton Stud-consigned mare in Newton's Night, by Galileo. The 150,000-guinea purchase is a winning sister to United States grade 3 scorer Dress Rehearsal and is the dam of Treasure Isle, winner of a listed race at the Curragh this summer for Aidan O'Brien. The No Nay Never colt was also third in the Prix d'Arenberg (G3) in September. Newton's Night is the second dam of Space Legend (IRE), a son of Sea The Stars (IRE) who was runner-up to Calandagan (IRE) in the King Edward VII Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot this year. Further back in the page, under Newton's Night's dam Sassenach, are the likes of Fairy of The Night, My Titania, Muthmir, My Prospero and My Oberon. Another notable lot in the Southern Hemisphere section of the sale was Crimson Coronet, a winning daughter of Zoustar (AUS) who sold to Avenue Bloodstock from New England Stud for 100,000 guineas. The mare has an excellent Hascombe and Valiant pedigree, being out of listed Chalice Stakes winner Crimson Rosette (IRE), a Teofilo (IRE) half sister to 2023 Gold Cup (G1) hero Courage Mon Ami (GB) and half sister to listed Floodlit Stakes winner and September Stakes (G3) second Lion's Pride (GB). This was the final sale of the year on the online platform. During 2024, a total of 699 lots were sold for an aggregate of 6,687,950 guineas (US$8,894,974). On Thursday, 42 lots sold for turnover of 728,450 guineas (US$968,839) and at an average of 17,344 guineas (US$23,068). The median was 5,150 guineas (US$6,850). The next Tattersalls Online sale takes place Jan. 14-15.
