No Payoffs in March 13 Colonial Opener; Refunds Issued

A delayed second race and other contests March 13 were conducted with betting.

A snafu that track operator Churchill Downs Inc. attributed to needing required wagering consents led to no wagering payouts and betting refunds being issued for the first race March 13 at Colonial Downs. The seven-furlong maiden claimer, the first race of the track's spring meet that was added this year, was contested for purse money only.

The Colonial Downs simulcast feed showed victorious Tethered Soul entering the winner's circle at 3-2 odds—though the race's odds and potential winning payoffs were ultimately rendered moot. Forty Love, Never Till Now, Free Dance, and Ecumenical rounded out the official order of finish after stewards made no change following a jockey's objection involving the fourth-place and runner-up finishers that was unrelated to the wagering issue.

The second race, delayed about a half-hour from its scheduled post time, was conducted with betting, as were other races Thursday.

"As this spring meet marks a first-of-its-kind event, we encountered a unique situation regarding the required consents for all wagering activity," CDI, which owns Colonial Downs, said in a statement. "Out of an abundance of caution, we made the decision to issue refunds on race 1. Following swift collaboration among all parties involved, we ensured all required consents are in place. We regret the inconvenience and look forward to an exciting weekend of racing at Colonial Downs."

After three spring dates this week, Colonial will race an expanded 41 days this summer during its traditional racing season.
