Reigning Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna, last of seven in the May 2 La Troienne Stakes (G1) at Churchill Downs, will be x-rayed and examined by renowned Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital surgeon Dr. Larry Bramlage, trainer Kenny McPeek posted May 3 on X.
The La Troienne marked the lone time in Thorpedo Anna's 13-race career that the 10-time winner had not finished either first or second. Jostled between horses in the run to the first turn, she recovered to track pacesetting Randomized down the backstretch, but Thorpedo Anna never offered her customary response when asked by regular rider Brian Hernandez Jr.
Racing 20 days after a victory in the Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) at Oaklawn Park, she faded to finish 8 1/2 lengths behind the eventual rallying winner, Raging Sea.
"The first turn incident may have thrown her off her game, or maybe the three-week turnaround wasn't my best choice," McPeek continued in his post. "She showed no signs she couldn't handle that. I'm more critical of myself than anyone. Regardless, she won't be rushed back soon."
The La Troienne was the third race of 2025 for Thorpedo Anna, the 2024 Kentucky Oaks (G1) and Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) winner who had scored in the March 8 Azeri Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn in her return as a 4-year-old.
The daughter of Fast Anna races for owners Brookdale Racing, Mark Edwards, Sherri McPeek's Magdalena Racing, and breeder Judy Hicks.
