Nyquist Colt Hits $1 Million at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic

After securing the rights for Hip 79, a colt by Nyquist, April Mayberry responded as most people would after spending $1 million. "A little shaky," she said with a laugh. The colt is out of a half sister to grade 1 winners Madcap Escapade and Dubai Escapade and became the first horse to reach seven figures May 20 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. Mayberry Farm signed the ticket for the Wavertree Stables-consigned colt who went one furlong in :10 2/5 at the May 14 under tack show. Working on a sloppy track, the colt consigned as Hip 79 stayed well wide of the rail but got over the ground impressively. The Kentucky-bred colt was a $240,000 pinhook out of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where Bridie Harrison consigned him on behalf of breeder Peter Blum Thoroughbreds. The chestnut colt is out of the unraced Giant's Causeway mare Deja Vu. The 19-year-old mare has 12 foals of racing age that include the grade 1-placed stakes winner Crystal Ball, by Malibu Moon, and stakes-placed Escapade, by More Than Ready. Deja Vu, out of the stakes-winning Saratoga Six mare Sassy Pants, delivered a chestnut full sister to hip 79 in 2024. Bidding for an undisclosed partnership, Mayberry said she probably wouldn't have gone much further for the colt, who she was surprised saw such vigorous bidding. Nyquist stands this year at Darley near Lexington for $175,000. His 2025 graded performers include Beholder Mile Stakes (G1) winner Cavalieri, Beaumont Stakes (G2) winner Verity, Santa Anita Oaks (G2) winner Tenma, and Gosger, winner of the Lexington Stakes (G3) and runner-up in the May 17 Preakness Stakes (G1) at nearby Pimlico Race Course. Mayberry and the partnership struck again later in the sale, returning to the Wavertree well for Hip 189. Mayberry dropped the hammer at $750,000 for a Tiz the Law colt out of the stakes-placed Broken Vow mare Janis's Joy. "The client really likes Tiz the Law," Mayberry said. "We've tried to get a couple at previous sales. Didn't get them. … This horse is nice and fluid. The way he moves, just a real nice way about him." Second crop stallion Tiz the Law is sire of this year's Louisiana Derby (G2) winner and Kentucky Derby (G1) contender Tiztastic. Bred in Kentucky, the Tiz the Law colt was listed as a $60,000 RNA at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. He re-entered the sales ring at the 2024 Keeneland September Sale, where he sold to Deuce Greathouse for Pura Vida Investments for $95,000 out of the Hartwell Farm, agent for Hennessy Bloodstock consignment. Hip 189 was bred in Kentucky by Frankfort Park Farm. The dam had four wins from 18 starts and hit the board 12 times. She has four other foals of racing age, and three of them are winners.
