Former Ontario HBPA President Cohen Dies

Cohen dedicated his life to the horse racing industry.

Anne M. Eberhardt

It's with the deepest regret that I inform you that past fellow director Conrad Cohen has passed away, Sue Leslie wrote in a post on the website of the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association of Ontario.

Her remarks are below:

Conrad dedicated his life to the horse racing industry. His involvement started as an Owner/Trainer over 45 years ago. Several years later Conrad was elected to the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association of Ontario's (HBPA) board of directors, where he remained a director until 2024. Over the years Conrad led the HBPA as President, Vice President, Chair of the Health and Safety Committee, and Chair of the Rules and Medication Committee; he also represented the HBPA on the board of the Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium (FELRC).

Conrad was always an advocator for the health and welfare of our equine athletes and was a strong supporter of our horse people especially when it came to rules and medications. He spearheaded the legalization of Lasix on race days and represented horse people with positive tests.

He has always been a champion for any industry participant, staff and graciously supported Equine Guelph, CARD, the FELRC, the National HBPA, and LongRun.

I cannot thank Conrad enough for his years of service to the HBPA. Over the years Conrad and I became trusted friends, he was great supporter, always had my back and encouraged me on hard days at HBPA. I will miss his advice, our lengthy phone calls and cherish our lively debates.

The Board and staff of the HBPA send prayers to Conrad's wife Susan and the entire Cohen family.
