Zulu Kingdom Back at Saratoga for Pennine Ridge Stakes
Last seen on the Kentucky Derby (G1) undercard winning the American Turf Stakes (G1T), the Chad Brown-trained Zulu Kingdom (IRE) returns June 7 in the $300,000 Pennine Ridge Stakes (G3T) at Saratoga Race Course going 1 1/16 miles. He will face nine rivals including Kentucky Derby (G1) participant Flying Mohawk, who returns to turf after that off-the-board finish in his lone start on a dirt track. Zulu Kingdom has won all but one of his six career starts, his lone loss coming when he seventh in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T) last fall. Prior to the American Turf Stakes, the 3-year-old son of Ten Sovereigns (IRE) won the Columbia Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs in his sophomore debut. Flavien Prat will be aboard for owners Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb, William Strauss, and Michael Caruso. Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) runner-up Flying Mohawk, who finished a disappointing 18th in the Kentucky Derby for trainer D. Whitworth Beckman, looks to rebound on the turf this Saturday while adding blinkers. The son of 2014 Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T) winner Karakontie (JPN) should appreciate the return to the surface over which he has registered both of his career wins. Frankie Dettori has the mount. Also entered Saturday is multiple stakes winner Mi Bago, who finished fourth behind Zulu Kingdom in the American Turf. Irad Ortiz Jr. will ride for owner Gary Barber and trainer Mark Casse. Todd Pletcher entered three—A. P. Kid, Bulldoze, and Noble Confessor.
