A total of 372 Japanese-bred yearlings are cataloged for the Hidaka Breeders Association Selection Sale at Shizunai July 21-23. The format of the Selection Sale was changed last year, with Day 1 conducted as a "Premium Session."
The biggest consignors are Yoshihiro Ito's Grand Stud and Masatake Iida's Chiyoda Farm, which offer 13 yearlings each. Hip 48, from Grand Stud, is a colt by Charlatan , whose first crop are 2-year-olds this year, out of Polvorada, winner of the 2021 Mil Guineas (G1). Hip 42, from Chiyoda Farm, is a colt by Bricks and Mortar, who is a half brother to Great Pearl, winner of the Heian Stakes (G3) and the Antares Stakes (G2).
Kizuna, Japan's leading sire in 2024, is represented by four yearlings. Hip 61, from Haruya Yoshida's Oiwake Farm, is a colt by Kizuna out of Rainbow Dahlia (JPN), winner of the 2012 Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup (G1); and Hip 82, from Harry Sweeney's Paca Paca Farm, is a colt by Kizuna out of Self Preservation, who finished second in the 2011 Del Mar Debutante (G1) and was bought by Paca Paca Farm at the 2013 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale for $280,000.
Another top prospect entered in the sale is Hip 13, a colt by first-crop sire Epicenter out of Marcy Darcy, whose dam is Hot Dixie Chick, winner of two graded stakes including the 2009 Spinaway Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course. Hot Dixie Chick is also the dam of the graded stakes-placed Union Jackson and grade 1 winner Pauline's Pearl.
The first session starts at noon local time July 21, and 9:00 a.m. July 22-23.
