Shivananda Parbhoo, best known as the trainer of 2012 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) winner Trinniberg, has been suspended for two years for a clenbuterol positive. The suspension was issued as the final decision of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's Anti-Doping and Medication Control Program Arbitration Panel. HISA's enforcement arm, the Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit, noted Parbhoo's violation and penalties Aug. 28 on its website.
In addition to Parbhoo's suspension, which began Aug. 27, the trainer was ordered to pay a fine of $25,000 and $10,000 in arbitration costs. Parbhoo's runner, American Speed, who tested positive for clenbuterol, was disqualified from his respective second- and fifth-place finishes Jan. 5 and Jan. 24 at Gulfstream Park.
Clenbuterol is a bronchodilator with anabolic properties. Under HISA, clenbuterol can only be administered in the context of a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship for therapeutic use at a maximum of 30 days in a six-month period. If a horse has been treated with clenbuterol, official workout and clearance testing are required to re-establish eligibility to race. Clenbuterol is deemed a banned substance if not prescribed by a veterinarian, and such treated horses are to be placed on the vet's list.
N.S.V. Racing's American Speed, a stakes-placed son of More Than Ready, has been unraced since his fifth-place effort in a Jan. 24 starter handicap at Gulfstream. The 5-year-old gelding was the last horse Parbhoo, a dual graded stakes-winning trainer, saddled this year. Parbhoo has 26 wins from 203 starters over his training career with a gap in his North American career statistics from 2014-22.
