$92K Take Charge Indy Yearling Filly Tops Iowa Sale

Highlighted by the purchase of a yearling Take Charge Indy filly for $92,000 by Judy Pryor, the Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association Fall Mixed Sale concluded Aug. 28 with preliminary receipts totaling $813,550. The sales topper (Hip 31)—consigned by Iowa State University, agent for the university and Poindexter Thoroughbreds—is the second foal produced from the unraced Speightstown mare Surpass. Her first foal, a 2-year-old Volatile colt named Outmatch, also bred by H. Allen Poindexter, ran second on debut at Prairie Meadows Aug. 9 for Poindexter Thoroughbreds, AG Racing Stables, Reunion Racing Stables, and Kevin Eikleberry. Eikleberry trains that juvenile. Hip 31 is already named Ethelyn, though her name is eligible to be changed before racing. Take Charge Indy stands in Kentucky at WinStar Farm, where he stood this past breeding season for $7,500. His top runners this year include graded stakes winner Indy Bay, and dual stakes winners Take Charge Milady and Bernietakescharge. Seventy-three hips were consigned to the sale at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, which featured horses of various ages but mostly yearlings, before nine horses were withdrawn. Ten of the 64 horses through the ring (15.6%) failed to meet their reserve based on preliminary results from the ITBOA. The average price was $15,066, and the median $10,000. The 2024 sale generated gross sales of $943,600, with 62 horses sold. Last year, the average was $15,219, and the median $9,750.
