Reigning Eclipse Award winner Flavien Prat continues to accumulate New York wins and stakes race victories. This week at his winter base of Aqueduct, he won a total of 14 races including a five-win day on Sunday and a sweep of the day's stakes races. The panel of racing experts voted Prat Jockey of the Week for November17-23.
The weekly honor recognizes jockeys for significant riding accomplishments and who are members of the Jockeys' Guild. Founded in 1940, the Guild represents more than 1050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States.
Prat's very good week began on Thursday with three wins on the 9-race card. He won the Race 1 for Eclipse Award trainer Chad Brown then Race 4 for trainer Michelle Nevin and wrapped up the day in Race 9 for trainer Linda Rice.
On Friday, he took the early double with a win for Linda Rice followed by Race 2 for Eclipse Award trainer Brad Cox. Riding for trainer George Weaver, Prat won Race 5 then Race 9, the nightcap, for trainer Michael Maker.
On Saturday, his two wins included Race 5 for Michael Maker and Race 6 for Chad Brown.
On Sunday's nine-race card, Prat won Race 2 for George Weaver and Race 3 for trainer Mark Casse. In Race 4, Chad Brown gave a leg up to Prat on Oversubscribed (GB) in the Forever Together Stakes.
Off as the 1-2 favorite in the field of seven, Oversubscribed raced along the fence until finding racing room approaching the top of the stretch. The 4-year-old filly then set her sights on pace setter and stablemate Malleymoo. Oversubscribed took command near the wire to win by a half length in 1:43.58 for the 1-1/16th mile turf test for fillies and mares three-years-old and up.
"She felt good," said Prat to NYRA publicity. "When I tipped her out, she gave me a good run and got tired in the last eighth of a mile, but she managed to get the job done."
Riding for trainer John Terranova II, Prat was aboard Fast Market in the Grade III Pebbles. Off as the 3-2 favorite, Fast Market settled near the back of the field before making her move at the top of the stretch posting a 1-1/2 length win in 1:43.22 for the 1-1/16th mile turf contest for 3-year-old fillies and the final turf race of the year in New York.
Prat wrapped up his five-win day in Race 9 for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher.
"It's been a very good week," said Prat. "I was riding good horses all week long and they responded properly. It's been good so far. Hopefully the momentum stays as long as it can."
Prat announced he will ride in New York this winter but this week he will be at Churchill Downs as they close their fall meet. He has the call in eight stakes.
Other nominees for Jockey of the Week included Juan Hernandez who won the Native Diver (G3), Jose Ortiz who won the Commonwealth Turf (G3) Umberto Rispoli with a win in the Red Carpet (G3) and Edgard Zayas who won a stakes race and collected his 10th leading rider title at Gulfstream Park.
