Loughnane Sets Modern British Record, Rides 222 winners
Billy Loughnane broke a 21st-century record in Britain by riding 222 winners in a calendar year, surpassing Kieren Fallon's mark set in 2003. He did so at Lingfield Park Racecourse on New Year's Eve with his penultimate ride of 2025 aboard the 5-4 favorite Invited in the mile handicap. Loughnane made all on the Middleham Park-owned hope, setting steady fractions and kicking for home around the final bend. Hitched, ridden by Luke Morris, closed in the final furlong, but Invited found enough to score by a neck. The jockey was out of luck in his four other rides on the card, but Invited's win was enough to see him surpass Fallon, while there was an additional celebration as it was trainer George Boughey's 100th winner of 2025. Gordon Richards remains the holder of the outright record for most flat winners in a year in Britain, having ridden 269 in 1947. Loughnane said, "I'm relieved; there was a little bit of pressure today, but I'm delighted to get it done and to do it for George as well. It means a lot. "I wouldn't be where I am without George; he's been everything to me since I started and has supported me the whole way up. To Charlie Appleby and the Godolphin team, Dad (Mark Loughnane), and all the trainers that have supported me, a massive thank you." Loughnane earned his first career group 1 win in 2025 when victorious aboard Godolphin's Rebel's Romance (IRE) in the Grosser Preis Von Berlin (G1).
