First Foal For Preakness Winner Seize The Grey
Gainesway announced Jan. 19 the arrival of the first reported foal by classic winner and multiple grade 1 winner Seize the Grey. The bay colt was born Jan. 17 at Tanya Johnson's Red Gables Stud near Lexington. He is out of the stakes-winning mare Dontmesswithjoanne (Pioneerof the Nile), winner of the Red Camelia Stakes. The colt comes from the immediate family of champion 2-year-old filly Just FYI and grade 1 winners Stellar Jayne and Starrer. "We couldn’t be happier with this mare’s first foal for us. He is strong, correct, and has impressive size," Johnson said. "Seize The Grey delivered everything we were looking for in this mating, and we are excited to watch his progress." Campaigned by MyRacehorse and trained by Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas, Seize The Grey became the highest-earning son of Arrogate. As a juvenile, Seize The Grey broke his maiden at Saratoga Race Course, defeating future Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Dornoch. At 3, he won the Pat Day Mile Stakes (G2) in front-running style and followed with two grade 1 wins against the top 3-year-olds of his crop, the Preakness Stakes (G1) and the Pennsylvania Derby (G1). Seize The Grey was well received by breeders in his debut season at stud, covering 196 mares—the fifth-most of any first-crop North American stallion in 2025. He will stand the 2026 season at Gainesway for an advertised fee of $25,000.
