European Champion, Coolmore Broodmare Maybe Dies at 17

Coolmore announced Jan. 27 the death of their European champion 2-year-old filly, Maybe. The dam of Coolmore stallion and Two Thousand Guineas (G1) hero Saxon Warrior (JPN) died at age 17 following a sudden illness. Coolmore manager James Mockridge said: "She was the loveliest, sweetest mare and will be greatly missed by all of those who took such great care of her during her time here." A daughter of Galileo (IRE) bred on the same cross as Frankel (GB), Maybe was purchased for €340,000 at the 2010 Arqana August Yearling Sale from Croom House Stud. In an unbeaten juvenile campaign, she followed up success in the Chesham Stakes with three group wins, culminating in the Moyglare Stud Stakes (G1). Sent off as the favorite for the One Thousand Guineas (G1) the following spring, she finished a creditable third behind stablemate Homecoming Queen. One of only three mares chosen by Coolmore on their first foray into breeding to Japanese sire sensation Deep Impact in 2013, her first foal was black-type performer Pavlenko, and her second was Two Thousand Guineas and Racing Post Trophy (G1) hero Saxon Warrior, now ensconced at Coolmore. Maybe is also responsible for group scorer Drumroll, another by Deep Impact, and More Beautiful, a stakes-placed daughter of War Front. Maybe's 2-year-old colt by Dubawi (IRE) is in training in Ballydoyle, while her yearling colt by the same sire has been retained. She was rested during last year's breeding season.
