Charmein Phelan Acquires ANZ Bloodstock News
Charmein Phelan has signed a deal to acquire ANZ Bloodstock News, marking an exciting new chapter in its history. ANZ Bloodstock News, which was established 20 years ago, has long been a pillar of delivering industry leading news on bloodstock and racing to a global audience. Phelan has been with the Racing Post, part of Spotlight Sports Group, since May 2022 and has been a senior member of their global leadership team in her role as the global head of bloodstock. Phelan has played a central role in shaping ANZ Bloodstock’s reputation as a trusted and authoritative voice within the industry. Under her leadership, the business has built deep relationships across Australia and New Zealand and established itself as an essential source of news, insight, and commercial intelligence. Phelan had spoken to SSG CEO Mark Renshaw in mid 2025 about her intention to acquire a business in the future, and, following a strategic review of SSG, this created the opportunity. Phelan commented, “For some time now, I have been thinking about a business acquisition, and it made sense to purchase a business which I already know so well, believe in wholeheartedly, and has a strong reputation globally. I am delighted to secure ANZ Bloodstock News and can’t wait to strengthen our brand and enhance our offering. While at the Asian Racing Conference in Riyadh, where Phelan and Renshaw worked through plans for the transition of ANZ, Renshaw said, “Charmein has been instrumental in the success of ANZ Bloodstock. We are delighted to support her in this transition and are confident the business will continue to thrive under her ownership. This outcome reflects a positive and collaborative process for all involved.” The deal underscores the strength of the ANZ Bloodstock brand and its importance within the bloodstock and racing ecosystem. With a clear strategy and dedicated leadership, the business is well placed to build on its strong foundations. Phelan has committed to ANZ Bloodstock News continuing without disruption to its loyal clients and dedicated readers, commenting, “To bring ANZ Bloodstock News under Australian ownership is a proud and exciting moment. ANZ Bloodstock has an outstanding reputation and an incredibly loyal audience. ANZ will continue to provide the great stories and insights which our audience have come to love, but we will also enhance our current offering to meet the needs of an ever-changing market.” Phelan said, “I am looking forward to continuing to support and work with our loyal clients. The team and I are energized and excited about this opportunity and the next chapter of ANZ’s evolution.” The new chapter of ANZ will take effect from April 2026.
