George Moncrief will become the Canterbury Park track superintendent for the 2026 racing season that begins May 23. Moncrief, currently track superintendent at Sunland Park and Zia Park in New Mexico where he has held the role since 2021, has a long history and familiarity with the Canterbury Park racing surface.
Moncrief ran the racetrack maintenance crew at Canterbury Park in 2015 and 2016. He held various positions on the track crew since his return in 2019 and has been assistant superintendent to Javiar Barajas since 2023. Barajas recently took the superintendent position at Ellis Park.
"George has been an asset to our racing program for many years," company CEO Randy Sampson said. "He has a good rapport with our trainers and jockeys and also understands Minnesota weather and the capabilities of our main track surface. I am confident he will uphold the standards that have positioned Canterbury Park as one of the safest tracks in the nation."
In his role as track superintendent, Moncrief is responsible for maintaining a safe and consistent dirt track surface during training and racing hours as well as insuring compliance with all safety standards set by the Minnesota Racing Commission and HISA.
