Spendthrift Goes to $900K for Omaha Beach Filly at OBS

During the April 14 opening session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, Spendthrift Farm went to $900,000 to secure a filly (Hip 74) by their leading fourth-crop stallion Omaha Beach. Consigned by Tom McCrocklin, agent, the speedy filly highlighted the first day of the under-tack show last week, breezing a quarter-mile in :20 4/5. "The way she breezed, she did it pretty effortlessly, and handled everything really well. Good mind on her, strong, classy filly," said Ned Toffey, general manager of Spendthrift Farm. Hip 74 was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, and is the second foal out of the More Than Ready mare Ready for Charm, who is a half sister to two graded stakes performers and two stakes winners. The filly's page received a timely update during the opening day of the Keeneland spring meet, when Percy's Bar, out of a half sister to Ready for Charm, won the Ashland Stakes (G1). Spendthrift Farm is quite familiar with the daughter of Upstart, as their homebred filly, Tommy Jo, was placed above Percy's Bar in last fall's Alcibiades Stakes (G1) via a disqualification of Percy's Bar because of interference in the stretch. McCrocklin purchased the filly as a yearling at the 2025 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings Sale for $400,000 out of the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment. "We've had good luck buying off Tom," Toffey said. "She did things the right way. Really, nothing not to like about her. "I can't say she looks like Kopion, but I did keep thinking about Kopion when we were looking at her. I think she's got a little bit more of a More Than Ready hind leg on her, but she's a big, impressive filly." Kopion is the all-time leading runner for Omaha Beach and winner of two grade 1 races. Her career was highlighted by a win in last year's Derby City Distaff Stakes (G1) over the well-respected Hope Road, Ways and Means, and eventual 2025 Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) winner Scylla. She retired last fall with a record of 5-3-0 from 10 career starts, and earnings totaling $1,204,700. "It's a wonderful pedigree, and she'll be a nice addition to the broodmare band no matter what she does," Toffey said of Hip 74. Omaha Beach has sired nine graded stakes winners to date, three of them achieving grade 1 status. He stands at Spendthrift Farm for an advertised fee of $75,000.
