War Front Pensioned Following 2026 Breeding Season
Claiborne Farm's marquee sire War Front, who sired elite performers and has sons standing worldwide, has been pensioned following the conclusion of this year's breeding season, as initially reported by Daily Racing Form and confirmed by the farm. The 24-year-old son of Danzig was born at Claiborne and raced as a homebred for Joseph Allen. He won the 2006 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Breeders' Cup Handicap (G2) and was runner-up in the Vosburgh Stakes (G1) and Forego Stakes (G1). War Front would go on to play a bigger role as a stallion, filling the shoes of Claiborne's important international sire Danzig who was 25 when War Front was born. He sired 121 black-type winners worldwide, including 73 graded/group stakes winners and four champions. Among his graded stakes winners are 26 grade/group 1 winners who thrilled racegoers in North America, Europe, Australia, and Hong Kong. He also sired an American classic winner in War of Will who captured the 2019 Preakness Stakes (G1). His progeny have earned more than $113.1 million so far. War Front has consistently ranked among the top sires in North America and ranked especially high in the leading turf sire standings. While he never obtained the top spot, he ranked second twice to Kitten's Joy in 2016-17. Walker Hancock, president of Claiborne, said War Front is in good health but the pensioning was out of an abundance of caution because of his age. "He's been too good to us to risk his health. He's given us enough," Hancock said.
