Keen Ice Sold to Rancho San Jorge in Mexico

Keen Ice, a grade 1 winner and sire of 2022 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Rich Strike, was sold at the beginning of the year to Germán Larrea Mota-Velasco's Rancho San Jorge in Mexico, Calumet Farm confirmed July 27. The 14-year-old son of Curlin entered stud at Calumet in 2018 after completing a racing career that produced multiple graded stakes wins and earnings of $3,407,245. As first reported by Paulick Report, Keen Ice was sold in January and then relocated to Mexico at the end of March, according to export records. Larrea Mota-Velasco is the CEO of Grupo Mexico, the country's largest mining company. He races under the name St. George Stable, with his top horses to date including multiple United States grade 1 winner and homebred Letruska and Mexican Triple Crown winners Huitlacoche (MEX) (2015) and Kukulkán (MEX) (2018). As a racehorse, Keen Ice raced primarily for Donegal Racing. He won the 2015 Travers Stakes (G1) over Triple Crown winner American Pharoh and won the 2017 Suburban Stakes (G2). He also was runner-up in the 2017 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) and Whitney Stakes (G1). As a stallion, Keen Ice has sired 163 winners to date, led by Rich Strike, who stands at Irish Hill & Dutchess Views Stallions near Stillwater, N.Y., and other black-type winners Bold Leader, 2022 Puerto Rican champion imported 3-year-old; multiple stakes winner King Ice; and 2023 Manitoba Derby winner Mano Dura. Keen Ice's runners have collectively earned more than $18.2 million and average $79,960 per starter.
