Blue Bolt continued her unbeaten season with a victory in the Prix Rothschild (G1) Aug. 2 at Deauville, a second group 1 victory of the summer as she confirmed the Falmouth Stakes (G1) form by again defeating Precise.
The Andrew Balding-trained 4-year-old, who last month beat her Aidan O'Brien-trained rival by 2 lengths at Newmarket, made it 4-for-4 in 2026 with a half-length success under Colin Keane.
Through binoculars and on an unhelpful television angle, it looked as though Blue Bolt—who sought the aid of the stands' side rail and was wide apart from Precise—might not get there in time, although the winning margin was half a length.
The front-running Moon Target held off Evolutionist for third as the visitors dominated the finish.
Keane felt that while the rail helped Blue Bolt, the drift to get there allowed Ryan Moore a second crack at the winner, and it is not hard to see why Balding nominated the Coolmore-sponsored Matron Stakes (G1) around left-handed Leopardstown as her next main target.
But the strapping 4-year-old daughter of Blue Point is no wayward pupil, more a mare in a hurry to assert her authority, and it will take an exceptional miler to lower her colors should she stick to fillies-only company.
"She's some filly, she really is," Balding said. "I wasn't very comfortable watching it. I thought we were beaten in the final furlong, but Colin judged it perfectly.
"She's got great physical strength for a filly, and that's her biggest quality. She's got great desire, so that also helps."
Blue Bolt now has two group 1s in the space of 23 days and is the first to do the Newmarket-Deauville double since Roly Poly in 2017, while the same owner, trainer and jockey combination won the £2m King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1) courtesy of Kalpana in between.
Juddmonte European racing manager Barry Mahon said: "Prince Khalid (Abdullah) was a big advocate for giving horses time and the present owners are the same. Horses don't mature until they're 4 or 5 and we do tend to rush these horses off to stud for commercial reasons when they're still improving.
"In America and Australia they're big into still racing them at 5 and 6. The princes saw that and followed suit, and it's good to see them get the reward with some good 4 and 5-year-olds."
Precise enjoyed a much cleaner run at Blue Bolt than when getting broadsided coming out of the stalls in the Falmouth and ran what might be close to a career-best given the 9 lbs of weight-for-age allowance at Newmarket had shrunk to 6 lbs here.
Trainer Aidan O'Brien said: "I'm very satisfied with her. In the Falmouth Stakes, Blue Bolt beat her 2 lengths, and today she finished half a length down, even though the weight allowance was less favorable. So it was a very good run.
"It's possible she will step up in trip for her next start. We'll see if that's necessary. We'll take some time to consider it."
Moon Target was still in there fighting at the furlong pole, and connections were pleased with another solid effort.
Sir Mark Prescott's assistant William Butler said: "She's run right up to her form and they're three very good fillies who have produced the same form all the time.
"We're very proud of her. She settled well in front, and we're delighted she could hold on to third."
