Although Explora had been considered one of the best in her division since the start of her career, she came into the Aug. 8 Test Stakes (G1) having never compiled back-to-back victories.
The daughter of Blame gained immediate notice last year with a 4 3/4-length maiden special weight tally over 5 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar on her debut, but was run down late by Bottle of Rouge as the odds-on favorite in the Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1). A dominant triumph in the Oak Leaf Stakes (G2) saw Explora sent off as the public's choice in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), but she was unable to peg back the front-running Super Corredora, missing by three-quarters of a length.
The dark bay/brown filly opened her 2026 campaign with an easy 5 1/4-length victory in the Santa Ynez Stakes, but was then upset at odds-on by subsequent Kentucky Oaks (G1) runner-up Meaning in the Las Virgenes Stakes. Returning in the Honeybee Stakes (G3), Explora gained the day by three-quarters of a length over Counting Stars, now generally considered the leader of the 3-year-old filly division. In the Kentucky Oaks, she attempted to make all the running, but tired late to finish fourth behind Always a Runner, Meaning, and Counting Stars.
A drop back to 7 furlongs for the Leslie's Lady Stakes at Churchill Downs saw a 1 1/4-length victory in a quick 1:21.16, just 0.72 off Groupie Doll's 14-year-old track mark. With that effort under her girth, Explora started as the favorite last Saturday to break the every-other-race pattern. She duly scored in style, taking the lead early in the stretch and powering away to score by 5 lengths.
Overall, it's clear that Explora is best as a sprinter, an aptitude that defies what appears to be a stamina-laden pedigree. She's a member of the 12th North American crop sired by Blame, a horse whose signature performance came when turning back the late charge of Zenyatta in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). The champion older male that year, Blame also garnered further top-level victories in the Whitney Handicap (G1) and Stephen Foster Handicap (G1), both at 1 1/8 miles.
As a sire, Blame—one of the last Roberto-line stallions at stud in the United States—has been consistently useful, without ever reaching the top commercial echelons. To date, he's been represented by 54 stakes winners, the best in addition to Explora being Wet Paint, successful in the 2023 Coaching Club American Oaks (G1); Marley's Freedom, who took the 2018 Ballerina Stakes (G1); the undefeated 2020 Arkansas Derby (G1) captor Nadal, now a stallion in Japan; Senga, who captured the 2017 Prix de Diane (French Oaks, G1); the 2018 Santa Margarita Stakes (G1) winner Fault; Abscond, winner of the 2019 Natalma Stakes (G1T); and the 2025 Preis von Europa (G1) winner Sibayan.
Explora's dam is Collections Choice, who won at a mile and is by Bernardini, the 2006 Preakness Stakes (G1) hero who added the Travers Stakes (G1) and Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) at 1 1/4 miles. Explora is her dam's fifth foal and fifth winner. Model, the second dam of Explora, had a turf-oriented pedigree, as she was by Giant's Causeway out of the 2002 English One Thousand Guineas Stakes (G1) runner-up Snowfire. Model flourished on all-weather surfaces, taking the 1 1/16-mile It's In The Air Stakes in 2008 at Hollywood Park, and earning several graded stakes placings, including a second in the 2008 Spinster Stakes (G1) and 2009 Santa Maria Handicap (G1) and a third in the 2009 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap (G1). In 2008-09, Hollywood Park, Keeneland, Santa Anita Park, and Del Mar all had all-weather main tracks.
A half sister to co-top-rated European 2-year-old filly of 1999 Preseli, Snowfire had a pedigree strongly influenced by the great foundation mare Almahmoud, as she was by Machiavellian, whose dam is 3x3 Almahmoud, once through Natalma. Her granddam, White Star Line, is also by Natalma's son Northern Dancer. Model was by a great-grandson of Northern Dancer and had another cross of Machiavellian's broodmare sire Halo, giving her five crosses of Almahmoud.
White Star Line actually takes high rank among the best daughters of Northern Dancer, her triumphs including the 1978 Kentucky Oaks (G1), Alabama Stakes (G1), Delaware Oaks (G1), and, 48 years before her great-great-great granddaughter, the Test Stakes (then a grade 3). At stud, White Star Line produced a pair of black-type winners, headed by French group 2 winner Whitehaven, and is ancestress of numerous others, including Valley of Gold (1995 Italian Oaks, G1), Dai Jin (2003 German Derby, G1), and Worthadd (2010 Italian Derby, G2).
White Star Line is out a true blue hen in Fast Line, the ancestress of more than 200 stakes winners, 33 of them group/grade 1, including Bernardini, who we have already mentioned as the broodmare sire of Explora. The family has been in the U.S. since the 1830s, when the mare Myrtle was imported from England to Virginia, there producing the great foundation mare Magnolia.
Explora, along with French listed winner Ribaltagaia, are the two stakes winners by Blame from 15 starters out of mares by Bernardini. He also has three stakes winners, including Senga, out of mares by Bernardini's sire, A.P. Indy, and a further seven, including Nadal, out of mares by other sons of A.P. Indy. We can also observe that Blame is out of a mare who is a Mr. Prospector/Nijinsky II cross, and Explora's granddam, Model, is a Storm Bird (similarly bred to Nijinsky II)/Mr. Prospector cross.
