Big Weekend for Alvarado to Shape Breeders' Cup Mounts

Owner/breeder Godolphin and trainer Bill Mott have a looming decision on Breeders' Cup World Championships candidates Sovereignty and Knightsbridge—and no one is awaiting that decision more eagerly than jockey Junior Alvarado, the regular rider for both. Reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty, who Alvarado rode to victory in the 2025 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1), is the Godolphin blue's leading hope for the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), while Knightsbridge put himself in contention for that race with a dominant victory in the Pacific Classic Stakes (G1), although he could be rerouted to the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) on the same card. All three—owner, trainer, and jockey—have demurred that it's a "good problem to have." But with no decisions expected until next month, at the earliest, Alvarado can focus on adding to his outstanding 2026 during the Aug. 29 stakes-loaded card at Saratoga Race Course, perhaps picking up some mounts for other Breeders' Cup divisions. Alvarado's three grade 1 mounts Saturday include Snowyte for trainer Danny Gargan in the Personal Ensign Stakes (G1). The race is part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In, offering an automatic, fees-paid berth into the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) Oct. 31 at Keeneland, a race Alvarado is eyeing for the second year in a row. Alvarado also has the call on a pair of Mott trainees: T Kraft in the Forego Stakes (G1) and Beauty Reigns in the Ballerina Stakes (G1), Breeders' Cup Challenge races toward the Dirt Mile and Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1), respectively. Alvarado is keeping busy as he looks to follow up on his huge weekend on the opposite coast. The morning of Aug. 21 he was aboard Sovereignty's workmate, his typical position, as the champion got back on the work tab at Saratoga following his victory Aug. 8 in the Whitney Stakes (G1), which secured his automatic berth in the Classic. Alvarado was then off to Del Mar for a pair of grade 1 races Aug. 22, which he swept. First up was the Del Mar Oaks (G1T), keeping his regular mount on Tam Tam for Rigney Racing and trainer Phil Bauer. The filly secured her first grade 1 win, parlaying a perfect stalking trip into a handy 1 1/4-length score. Alvarado said he was "pretty confident" and that the filly was just "enjoying the ride." For the next race, Alvarado pulled on the familiar Godolphin blue for Knightsbridge, a multiple graded stakes winner who was trying the classic 1 1/4 miles for the first time in the Pacific Classic, a "Win and You're In" race. Knightsbridge took it to 2024 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Full Serrano (ARG) through a blistering early pace and dominated late, with Alvarado easing up high in the irons through a 6 1/4-length victory. "In the gallop out, I couldn't even pull him up, he was going so strong," said Alvarado, back at Saratoga to ride the very next day. Knightsbridge is not likely to start again until the Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup card at Keeneland, at which point he could go in the Classic or cut back for the Dirt Mile. No decisions will be made until after Sovereignty's next start, the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) Sept. 18 at Belmont Park, in which he is expected to face defending Breeders' Cup Classic winner Forever Young (JPN). Last year, Sovereignty was forced to scratch from the Classic after spiking a temperature the week of the race. Alvarado and Mott got a consolation prize of sorts, winning the Breeders' Cup Distaff with Scylla, a Juddmonte homebred. It was the fourth career Breeders' Cup win for Alvarado, the regular rider for Godolphin's popular homebred Cody's Wish, winner of the 2022 and 2023 editions of the Dirt Mile and the 2023 Horse of the Year. He also won the 2023 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) aboard Just F Y I. She and Cody's Wish were both also trained by Mott. Snowyte would earn an automatic berth to this year's Distaff if she wins Saturday's Personal Ensign with Alvarado in the irons. Don Alberto Stable's homebred is by Good Magic, a sire Gargan has had great success with. The filly was grade 1-placed as a 2-year-old in 2024 while still a maiden, and finally scored her initial win last year. On March 29, she was second in the Top Flight Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack. She was not seen under colors again for nearly four months, finishing third July 24 in the Shuvee Stakes (G2) at Saratoga—behind Fully Subscribed and Scottish Lassie, both of whom she faces again Saturday, when she may be tighter off the layoff. With his three grade 1 mounts Saturday, Alvarado will be seeking to add to his 11 graded stakes wins already this year. In addition to his grade 1 wins in August with Sovereignty, Knightsbridge, and Tam Tam, he piloted Knightsbridge to win the Fred W. Hooper Stakes (G3) and Gulfstream Park Mile (G3). He has won a pair of stakes with Destino d'Oro, taking the Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf Invitational Stakes (G2T) and the Hillsborough Stakes (G2T). His other scores include the Inside Information Stakes (G2) with Grand Job, the Orchid Stakes (G3T) with Sultana, the Dinner Party Stakes (G3T) with Fort Washington and, at this Saratoga meet, the Adirondack Stakes (G3) with Stress Relief.
