Possiblemente Collects in Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint

Anything is possible for Possiblemente. T and E Racing's 6-year-old gelding, who began 2026 by racing in a $40,000 claimer, finishing third in the Jan. 9 mile race on Tapeta at Turfway Park for new trainer Joe Sharp, is now a millionaire and dual graded stakes-winning sprinter. And he's headed to the Breeders' Cup, no less. In winning the $1,747,025 million Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint Stakes (G2T) Sept. 5, the Taylor Logan-headed T and E Racing earned a $1,018,675 payday. Plus, with the race part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series: Win and You're In, the grass sprinter earned an automatic, expense-paid berth into the Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) at Keeneland. Such a scenario seemed improbable this past winter, but bettors were not fooled ahead of Saturday's race. Possiblemente went off as the 9-2 third favorite behind 7-5 favorite John the Beer Man and 7-2 second choice My Boy Prince, and understandably so. Since his initial loss to begin the season, he had posted three wins in five starts, with one of those victories coming in the May 30 Jacques Cartier Stakes (G3) on Tapeta at Woodbine. Between that start and the Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint, he had been second in the July 5 Harvey Pack Stakes on grass at Saratoga Race Course. He benefited Saturday from having hot-riding Jose Ortiz in the saddle, who had won three of the first five races on the card. The Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint gave him a fourth win with his first six mounts. "I love Kentucky Downs," he said. "Obviously, I was having a great meet at Saratoga, but here we have a couple horses as well, so I decided to (be) here." Ortiz had him perfectly positioned in the two path, pressing early leader Mondogetsbuckets as that one established a narrow lead with splits in the 6-furlong race in :22 and 43.82. Leaving the turn, Possiblemente began to surge past him and none could threaten him late. He was timed in 1:09.28 over firm ground on the undulating Kentucky Downs grass. He paid $28.95 to win for a $5 wager, the minimum bet at Kentucy Downs. He crossed the wire 1 1/4 lengths ahead of late-rallying Golden Afternoon, who bid from fifth to grab the place over a fading Mondogetsbuckets, who lasted for the show over We're in Trouble. The two favorites, John the Beer Man and My Boy Prince, ran seventh and sixth, respectively. Ortiz said he didn't expect to be so close to the pace, but his mount broke well and left him in a forward position. Possiblemente notched his 11th victory in his 34th career start and elevated his earnings to $1,525,023. He has competed for a series of different owners and trainers over his career, though not with the high-level success as seen for Sharp and T and E Racing. The winner, bred in Kentucky by Charles Fipke, is a chestnut son of Tale of Ekati out of the stakes-winning Not Bourbon mare Internal Bourbon. Possiblemente is one of five graded stakes winners for Tale of Ekati, who stood for $5,000 earlier this year at Darby Dan Farm in Kentucky. Sharp also trained another one of Tale of Ekati's top runners, Girvin, winner of the 2017 Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1). Now Possiblemente is poised to get a grade 1 opportunity in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. "I told the owners after Woodbine that in order to target the Breeders' Cup, there would have to be a few races that hit right," Sharp said. "And it did."
