Mystik Bayou Joins Derby Trail in Street Sense

Any person who once trailed their older siblings through the same lineup of teachers likely shares the experience of having an immediate reputation ahead of them—for better or worse—the second they step in the door on the first day of school. Luckily for Mystik Bayou, a 2-year-old Wells Bayou Oklahoma-bred colt, the reputation set by his older brother is a good one as he steps into the starting gate on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The half brother of 2024 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mystik Dan is set to compete for qualifying points himself Oct. 25 in the $200,000 Street Sense Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs. Both sons of the winning Colonel John mare Ma'am are homebreds for Lance Gasaway, Daniel Hamby, and 4G Racing and have Kenny McPeek providing the training services. Another stroke of luck for Mystik Bayou is, as a horse, he's not the one who has to answer any questions about his family history—that honor falls to McPeek. McPeek said that, at this stage, the horses are very different. Mystik Dan he described as a smaller, sprint-capable horse while Mystik Bayou is a bigger grinder type. "He's a bigger, longer-legged horse and maybe a little more bone than Mystik Dan, but talented as well," McPeek said. Yet, Mystik Bayou is actually ahead of where Mystik Dan was at this point. In 2023, Mystik Dan debuted Oct. 22 and broke his maiden at second asking Nov. 12. Meanwhile, Sunday's stakes debut will be Mystik Bayou's third start after a solid 4 1/4-length win over 1 1/16 miles Oct. 3 at Belmont Park. McPeek said he wants to get the horse a race around two turns, and with no allowance options available at those distances coming up at Churchill Downs, he had to wheel back a little quick. Still, he believes the horse has the talent to be successful. "This is a good next step, and I think he'll love two turns at Churchill," McPeek said. McPeek also enters one of Mystik Bayou's seven rivals, Very Gifted, a Brownwood Farm homebred son of Gift Box. He came from behind to break his maiden by a nose going 7 furlongs in a $30,000 maiden claiming race Oct. 9 at Keeneland, and he's another McPeek thinks will benefit from two turns. "It's a lot to ask coming his second start," McPeek said. "The owner was the breeder, and any black type is always good. He acts like he wants to go farther." The field also includes last-out maiden winners Staunch, a 4-length winner going 7 1/2 furlongs Sept. 26 at Churchill Downs for Bourbon Fueled Racing and trainer Brendan Walsh; Card Man, a 5-length winner going a one-turn mile Sept. 18 at Belmont Park for Jeffrey Drown and trainer Chad Brown; and Ritzy Rags, who was claimed for $30,000 out of his Sept. 16 Churchill Downs maiden win by Jeremy Haines and trainer Destin Heath. Those new shooters to the stakes ranks will have to compete with the unbeaten Blessed Flyer, a son of Dialed In trained by Michael Tomlinson for Patricia's Hope and Mark Farrar. He has shown to have the talent, winning the Bashford Manor Stakes in June at Churchill Downs. However, he's also shown immaturity—a late scratch from the Sept. 12 Iroquois Stakes (G3) after getting loose on the walkover. He will debut a pair of blinkers for this start. First Laugh Follows Cox Trend in Rags to Riches Offering Kentucky Derby qualifying points on a 10-5-3-2-1 scale to the top five finishers, the Street Sense is the centerpiece of an all-2-year-old "Stars of Tomorrow" card that kicks off Churchill Downs' 24-day fall meet. After Sunday, the meet follows a Wednesday-Sunday schedule through Nov. 29, with the exception of Oct. 30-31 when the Breeders' Cup is held at Keeneland. Also on Sunday is the Rags to Riches Stakes, offering the same point values toward the Kentucky Oaks (G1) to its top five finishers. Trainer Brad Cox has saddled three straight winners of the Rags to Riches, pulling off the Oaks double in 2024-25 with Good Cheer for Godolphin. This year, he returns with another Godolphin filly in First Laugh, a homebred daughter of Upstart. First Laugh follows the trend of a Cox Rags to Riches winner, having debuted at Horseshoe Indianapolis with a 7-length win. Four of Cox's five total Rags to Riches winners debuted as winners in Shelbyville, Ind. Godolphin also enters last-out maiden winner Wharfie with trainer Bill Mott. Like the Street Sense, McPeek has a pair of runners in Alcibiades Stakes (G1) third-place finisher Oh She Said Yes and last-out maiden claiming winner Juana Margarita.
