Sun Goddess Brings Shine to BC Juvenile Fillies Turf

When trainer Aidan O'Brien looks to add to his recent success in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T) Oct. 30 at Keeneland, he'll start with a massive, talented runner who harkens back to 2-year-olds of another era. Likely race favorite Sun Goddess (IRE) enters off five straight wins, four in group stakes, and boasts eight starts overall for trainer O'Brien and Coolmore-affiliated owners Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Westerberg. Three of those stakes wins have come at the highest level as the daughter of Sioux Nation has secured wins in the Cheveley Park (G1), Moyglare Stud (G1), and Phoenix (G1) stakes by a combined 8 3/4 lengths. She enters off the Sept. 26 Cheveley Park where she won by a widening length while setting a course record for a juvenile of 1:09.08 on good-to-firm going. O'Brien will try for his third win in this race since 2022 when Sun Goddess stretches out beyond 7 furlongs for the first time in Friday's 1-mile race expected to have a full field of 14. The trainer is confident she'll handle the added furlong. "She's a massive specimen for a 2-year-old and if you didn't change anything between now and next year she would be an impressive looker next year as she is now," O'Brien told Racing Post. "She's very special and she should get a mile easily. She's very unusual and looks a freak to be doing what she's doing." The recent Juvenile Fillies Turf winners for O'Brien include 2022 winner Meditate (IRE), who rallied from 10th to score by 2 1/2 lengths in her seventh start to secure her first grade 1 win and fourth group or graded stakes victory; and Lake Victoria (IRE), who posted a clear win in 2024 to wrap up a perfect juvenile season from five starts before securing classic glory the following season. Some of the most accomplished North American runners entered include Klaravich Stables' Domestic Agenda, who landed her second win in as many starts in the Miss Grillo Stakes (G2T) Oct. 3 at Belmont Park; Moving Forward Racing's homebred Serenas Ghost, who is also perfect in two starts after winning the Jessamine Stakes (G2T) going 1 1/16 miles on the Keeneland course; and Dutch Girl Holdings and Irving Ventures' Vanta, who stayed perfect in three starts when she rallied from sixth early to win the Surfer Girl Stakes (G3T) Oct. 4 at Santa Anita Park. Domestic Agenda is trained by Chad Brown, who leads all conditioners with six Juvenile Fillies Turf wins. Five of those wins have come with Miss Grillo winners, including Hard to Justify (2023), Newspaperofrecord (IRE) (2018), New Money Honey (2016), Lady Eli (2014), and Maram (2008).
