A total of 223 mares and fillies are cataloged for the JS Company Broodmare Sale Oct. 28 at Shizunai. Among the more interesting features of the of sale are two mares in foal to California Chrome , who took up stallion duty at Arrow Stud in Japan in 2020.
Hip 34 is Berangkat, a 7-year-old mare by the late Deep Impact offered in foal to California Chrome. She is a half sister to Curren Chan, a Japanese champion sprinter who won the Sprinters Stakes (G1) and Takamatsunomiya Kinen (G1). Curren Moe, the second foal out of Curren Chan, collected her fourth win at Chukyo Racecourse Sept. 26, when the Lord Kanaloa filly won the Nagashino Stakes.
Hip 117 is Lady Happiness, a 13-year-old mare by Montjeu in foal to California Chrome. She is out of Japanese Oaks (G1) winner Lady Pastel. Matenro Happiness, the first foal out of Lady Happiness, finished third in the Arlington Cup (G3) and earned ¥98,390,000 (US$870,587).
Another notable offering is Hip 89, Gracious Gal, a 4-year-old filly by Orfevre. Consigned by Shadai Farm, the filly is out of Gabby's Golden Gal, winner of the Acorn Stakes (G1) and Santa Monica Handicap (G1). She is offered in foal to Mind Your Biscuits, whose first Japanese crop was born in 2020.
Daring Bird, dam of Daring Tact, who will make her next start in the Oct. 18 Shuka Sho (G1) as she bids to complete the Triple Tiara, was purchased from the JS Company Broodmare Sale. Consigned by Shadai Farm, she was purchased by Hasegawa Farm for ¥3,600,000 ($33,700) in 2014 when she was out of training.
