Archarcharch Euthanized Due to Severe Infection

The 12-year-old son of Arch has been standing in South Korea since 2018.

Arkansas Derby (G1) winner and sire Archarcharch, who has resided in South Korea since 2017, died Oct. 15, according to Korea Racing Authority records.

The KRA's Alastair Middleton spoke with representatives of Sungsoo Farm at the request of Paulick Report, which first reported the stallion's death, and relayed that the horse was battling what they suspected to be a parasitic infection. Archarcharch was treated during the fall but his condition worsened.

Bred in Kentucky by Grapestock, a division of Tom Simon's Vinery, Archarcharch sold as a yearling for $60,000 to Robert Yagos at the 2009 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He won the Southwest Stakes (G3) and Arkansas Derby before drawing the unlucky post 1 in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1). He got injured in the Derby and was vanned off, ending his career with a 3-1-1 record from seven starts and earnings of $832,744.

As a stallion, Archarcharch entered stud at Spendthrift Farm in 2012. He has sired 11 black-type winners, including four grade/group winners and Singapore Horse of the Year and multiple champion Qatar Man. The 12-year-old son of Arch's best runner in North America was grade 1 winner and millionaire Next Shares. He also sired grade 2 winners Mr. Misunderstood and Ivy Bell and grade 3 winner and record setter Toews On Ice.
