A strong market continued in Japan, seeing figures jump during the Autumn Broodmares Sale conducted by JS Company at Shizunai Oct. 26.

One hundred fifty-nine of the 194 broodmares on offer sold for ¥985,017,000 (US$6,676,997), showing an increase of 73.6% over the 2021 sale. An average price of ¥6,195,075 ($41,993) shows an increase of 68.1% year-over-year. Sale records for both gross and average price were attained, last seen during the 2017 sale when the gross was recorded at ¥1,071,327,600 ($7,262,058), and the average price was ¥6,823,742 ($46,255). An improved clearance rate from 70.97% in 2021 to 81.96% in 2022 set a sale record.

"The yearling market was very strong this year, and the breeders were ready to reinvest their money to improve the quality of their broodmare band. The catalog was good enough to respond to the demand," Kentaro Hattori, president of JS Company, said after the session. "And I am glad to see international buyers were active."

Eternal Diva (Hip 66), a 6-year-old mare consigned by Shadai Broodmare, was purchased by Mint Co. for ¥62,700,000 ($425,016) to be the highest price during the single-session sale. She sold in foal to Chrysoberyl, the 2019 Japanese Dirt Champion, who took up stud duty at Shadai Stallion Station in 2022. She is a full sister to Great Time (JPN), a winner of five races at JRA, including the Nigawa Stakes and Brazil Cup.
