Pennsylvania-bred Tappin Josie won her third race in a row, as well as landing a first black-type stakes for sire Anchor Down, when she dug in for a three-quarters of a length victory in the March 6 Society Hill Stakes at Parx Racing.
Tappin Josie was claimed by trainer Horacio De Paz on behalf of client Darryl Abramowitz three starts back in an allowance optional claiming contest at Laurel Park. Picked up for $50,000, the filly romped by 4 1/2 lengths that afternoon.
In the Society Hill, a $75,000 stakes for 3-year-old fillies going 6 1/2 furlongs on the main track, Tappin Josie stalked fractions of :22.57 and :46.52 before advancing on the turn for home. Taking command and opening up a 1 1/2-length advantage at the head of the lane, she held off a late bid from Chickieness to score in a final time of 1:19.88 on fast track.
Bred by Charles Blanford, Tappin Josie registered her fifth win from 10 career starts and bumped her bankroll to $200,200.
Tappin Josie became the first stakes winner for Anchor Down, a graded stakes winning son of Tapit . Retired from racing in 2017, Anchor Down stood for five seasons at Gainesway Farm in Kentucky before being relocated to Iowa State University for the 2022 season. The sire of four current crops to race, Anchor Down stands the 2023 breeding season for a fee of $3,000.
