A couple of pricey New York-breds will take a shot at graded black type in the $175,000 Adirondack Stakes (G3) at Saratoga Race Course Aug. 3, along with four other 2-year-old fillies, all of which will be trying the 6 1/2-furlong distance for the first time.
A $500,000 purchase at this year’s Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, Iron Orchard will break from the far outside post 6 under jockey Joel Rosario. Bred in New York by Pine Ridge Stable and owned by Edward A. Childs and R. A. Hill Stable, the dark bay/brown filly broke her maiden at first asking by 5 1/2 lengths in a maiden race at Saratoga in early July as the odds-on favorite. Trained by Danny Gargan, the daughter of Authentic has posted bullet works in three of her last four works and led from gate to wire in her lone start.
Repole Stables paid $300,000 for Angel Gift at last year’s Fasig-Tipon's Saratoga Preferred New York-Bred Yearling Sale, money that looked well spent following the filly’s stalking four-length win at Saratoga during the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival. The half sister to grade 1 winner Cave Rock is trained by Todd Pletcher.
Florida-bred Mythical brings a 2-for-2 record to the Adirondack, both wins coming by open lengths. Bred and owned by Arindel, the Jorge Delgado trainee is another speedy sort. Unchallenged in her first two races, including the listed Tremont Stakes against colts, her far inside post position may be a hindrance to her front-running style.
Gary Barber and Peter Deutsch were able to secure Tiz in Sight by 2020 Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Tiz the Law for $85,000 at last year’s Keeneland September Yearling Sale. She is making her first start for trainer Mark Casse since June 25 at Churchill Downs, in which she got up by a neck to earn her first win.
Spa Prospector is the second Authentic filly in the race and another that prefers to do her running on the front end. Trained by Tom Amoss, she finished seventh over a fast track at Churchill Downs in June, then cruised to victory by 3 1/2 lengths in the slop at Saratoga. With no weekend rain predicted, she’ll look to prove that she’s no mere mudlark.
Completing the field is Meringue, the lone deep closer in the field who comes to the Adirondack off a neck win at Churchill Downs in June. The daughter of Frosted is trained by Rodolphe Brisset.
